On this day it is Brisbane's boats that are dressed to the nines. There is a boat parade on the Brisbane River and all participating boats are lit up imaginatively. Tourists can choose to be on the bank but the best views are had from a boat on the river. Most boats offer dinners accompanied by Christmas carols.

DEC 23 MIGAS FESTIVAL, TORROX, SPAIN
To enjoy a communal Christmas, head to the town of Torrox in Spain's Andalucia region. The town's residents kick-start their Christmas festivities by preparing a traditional dish called Migas in the town square. Migas might be a humble concoction of breadcrumbs, meat pieces and olive oil, but the quantity prepared on this day is anything but modest. Around 2,000kgs of flour and 500 litres of olive oil are tossed around in huge cauldrons, and the dish is then distributed to the gathered public along with wine.
