History: The Slovenes settled in their current territory in 6th to 8th centuries but fell under German domination in the 9th century. After 1848, the struggle for unification began. In 1918, Yugoslavia was established, and the majority of the Slovenes entered the new state, which became the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Slovenia, the most affluent Yugoslav republic, declared independence on June 25, 1991. In February 1992, EC granted recognition and in May, it was admitted to the UN. It is Croatia's main ally.
Agriculture: Agricultural products are wheat, potatoes, maize, timber, and livestock.
Industry: Steel, textiles, electricity, motor vehicles, sulphuric acid, bauxite.
