Location: The republic of Nicaragua is located in the heart of Central America. It is the largest but most sparsely populated of the Central American nations. It became an independent state in 1838. The Somoza dynasty ruled Nicaragua from 1933 - 1979.
History: The third Somoza was overthrown by armed revolution led by Sandinista National Liberation Front, which emerged as the leading political force in the election held in 1984. But Contra rebels, comprising mainly former members of Nicaraguan National Guard and supported by the U.S. waged a nine-year war against the government led by Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega. About 30,000 people wee killed. With the defeat of Ortega by Violeta Chamorro in the elections held in 1990, the civil war came to a close.
Agriculture: Agriculture is the principal source of national income. The most important agricultural products are cotton, coffee, sugarcane, rice, bananas, maize and fruit.
Industry: Chief industries are food processing, chemicals, matches, leather, beer and plastic goods.
Minerals: Gold, copper, silver, lead and zinc are found.
