Location: The Republic of Cyprus lies in the North Eastern corner of the East Mediterranean basin, at the meeting point of three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa.
History: Cyprus became independent in 1960. In 1974, it was invaded by Turkey and nearly 40% of its territory is still under Turkish occupation. A Turkish Cypriot Federated State was proclaimed in 1975 and in 1983 the state unilaterally proclaimed itself as the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" (TRNC). In 1994, informal talks were held between the Presidents of Cyprus and TRNC but no progress was made. In August 96, violence jolted Cypriots on both sides. UN attempts to reunify Cyprus have not been successful.
