Teppakulam Tank - Madurai

A few km to the east of the city is the Mariamman Teppakulam Tank. It covers an area as large as the Meenakshi Temple itself. A major festival (Teppam or Float Fesival) takes place in January and February when images of Meenakshi and lord Sundareshwara are mounted on floats and taken to the Tank.

The festival attracts thousands of pilgrims from all parts of India. The Tank was built by the same king, Thirumalai Naik and is connected to the Vaigai with underground channels. Madurai is also a known as the "City of Jasmine", known for its varieties of jasmine. Indeed, Madurai is a city of festival and there is one almost everyday. th050806
