Shore Temple - Mahabalipuram

The landmark of Mahabalipuram is a large but lonely Shore Temple which has stood the test of time braving the waves of the ocean for 1200 years. Once, it is believed, there were 7 such temples. Six of them have been lost to the sea, unable to protect themselves against the erosion by the sea. attempts are now being made to protect the existing temple for future generations.

Built by King Rajasimha in the 7th century AD, the Shore Temple comprises three shrines: one to Vishnu and the other two to Shiva. It is a good example of the finest stage of Dravidian architecture. The temple is surrounded by a row of bulls carved out of a solid rock. The temple stands with its back to the sea rising starkly against the white foam of the waves.

The two-spire Shore Temple is unique in that it houses shrines to both Shiva and Vishnu. In the Vishnu temple, you can see an 8-foot long bas-relief of Vishnu reclining on his serpent conch. Another chamber contains remnants of a 16-sided granite phallic lingam which once touched the ceiling. Rows of stone bulls guard the temple courtyard.

The beach around the temple is excellent and there are half a dozen good hotels offering accommodation to visitors. It is worthwhile spending a night here and seeing the temple in moonlight. The sea is excellent for swimming.
