Ranganathaswamy Temple - Srirangam

A very important landmark of the city is the Srirangam Temple (Ranganathar Temple) dedicated to Vishnu, built on an island in the middle of the River Cauvery. It covers a staggering 250 hectares. It is surrounded by seven concentric walls and has 21 gopurams. The Sri Jambukeshwara Temple is surrounded by 5 concentric walls and has a total of 7 gopurams. The top of the Fort is shrouded in coconut palms.

It is worth spending at least a day discovering the great and ancient city. It is a pleasant experience to roam around this ancient town.

This town is a famous pilgrimage centre to the followers of Sri Ramanujacharya. The temple here is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple complex of Sri Ranganathaswamy was built around the 13th and 14th centuries by the then Chola and Pandyan kings. The temple is surrounded by seven walls and the interesting thing to be noted is that within these walls the town is located. There is one thousand pillared halls.
