Nageshvara & Sarangpani Temples
Then comes Kumbakonam, a centre for gold and silversmiths. Its betel leaves are very much sought after. There are 12 temples in the city, some of them of great merit. Nageshvara (9th century) has very good sculptures, Sarangpani (13th-17th centuries) the largest with a ten-storey gopuram second only to Meenakshi temple in Madurai and Kumbheshvara (17th century), a large Nayak Temple housing remarkable silver vahanas (transport) required to move deities.
