Five Chariots (Pancha Rathas) - Mahabalipuram
Another 15 minutes walk and you see the monolithic 7th century Five Rathas (Five Chariots) named after the five Pandava brothers of Mahabharata. These rathas are guarded by three stone guardians- a lion, an elephant and the Nandi Bull. These temple chariots are also covered with ornate porches, pillars and statues. One has to admire the patience of the artists.
Back in town, there is a good open-air Museum and a School of Sculpture run by the Government. Here sculptors recreate excellent replicas of ancient masterpieces in marble, soapstone and granite. Prices are tempting.
