Danzborg Fort
On the way to this place is a Danish settlement, Tanzqueber, built by the Danish East India Company with a Danzborg Fort (1620) and the usual churches and colonial houses by the sea. There is a tourist bungalow to stay in case you want to fully discover this Danish township.
Gangaikonda Cholapuram
On the same route but with some diversion, we head off to Gangaikonda Cholapuram- a tongue twister. The name means "Ganga brought by Chola King City". The city was built by King Rajendra (1002-44) to commemorate his trip to the sacred Ganga and the waters of the river he brought back to the city. It is a vast building modeled on the Brihadeshwara temple built by his father at Thanjavur. There are excellent sculptures and a huge tank where vassal kings brought Ganga water when they visited his Court.
