LOTHAL
About 80 km south of Ahmedabad, archaeologists have discovered at Lothal the remains of the earliest known urban civilization in the Indian subcontinent. What the archaeologists have actually excavated is part of an ancient port - complete with dockyards, streets, houses, underground drains and a well. This was perhaps India's most ancient port having maritime contacts with Mesopotamia and Egypt. From all accounts, it appears that when Mohenjodaro fell into decay, Lothal and its surrounding areas continued to prosper till these were assimilated by the Aryans.
