Kankaria Lake & Cambay - Ahmedabad

Kankaria Lake

In the south-east of Ahmedabad city, an artificial lake Kankaria was constructed in 1451, which has 34 sides, each 60 metre long. It still survives and is now a popular picnic spot. The Zoo and a Children's Park in the area are excellent.

Cambay

Cambay, the old seaport of Ahmedabad is situated to the south-west at the northern end of the Gulf of Cambay. At the height of Muslim power, the entire region was called Cambay. When the first ambassador to the Mughal Court arrived in Ahmedabad, he carried with him a letter to the Mughal Emperor from the King of Cambay. The rise of Surat, however, eclipsed Cambay and when the port was silted, the decline was inevitable.
