The first thing that people notice upon entering Chandigarh is its neatness. Coming here is a refreshing change from almost any other city in the country. The wide, smith, uncluttered roads lined with trees, the disciplined traffic, the beautifully maintained traffic roundabouts, the uniform rows of houses, the clean air and the still unhurried pace of life together make an excellent first impression. It is clearly a city that takes both planning and execution seriously. The uniformly low skyline ensures that you have a view of the hills at all times. On a clear day, don’t be surprised if your hosts point out to you Kasauli’s features from their balcony.

Driving in Chandigarh is a breeze, and you need not get into a sweat over parking either. The city might seem too quiet through the greater part of the day but make no mistake: there’s a lot of business happening in those seemingly sleepy markets. It’s just that young Chandigarh has a sense of direction, and goes about its work without getting in other’s way. That includes the sky, which we have not blurred out with noxious fumes.
